E-Mail Adresse – gibt’s die?

Heute habe ich meine E-Mail Adresse bestätigen müssen. Tüp so: “Ihre E-Mailadresse die funktioniert? Also die gibt’s?” Ich so: “Ähm. Ja, was steht denn da?” – “$vorname@$nachname.de – sowas geht?”….

In Zeiten von Google, GMX und wie sie alle heißen denken die Leute gar nicht mehr daran wie cool es ist, eine eigene Domain zu haben. Damals guckten mich meine Freunde an und meinten: “Boah, geil!” – Danke Papa für’s schnelle reservieren! Und ihr anderen, ihr seid schön stolz auf “mein Geburtsjahr war noch frei!!!einself!!” thomas.mueller1993@gmail.com.

P.S.: Das Gespräch ging dann noch weiter, darüber dass ja die kompletten E-Mails nach Stichworten analysiert werden können bei Googlemail, das eine eigene Domain überhaupt nicht teuer und kompliziert ist und wie das dann mit der Kommunikation mit dritten ausschaut. Aber dazu später nochmal ausführlich und mehr.

Inspiration

Da sitzt und lernt man, die Zeit wo man über die tollsten Dinge stolpert…
Zum Beispiel über die Geschichte von Goa und tolle Musiken.

Und generell, für Inspiration, Humor, Zeitvertreib kann ich den Blog von Das Kraftfuttermischwerk und Metronaut empfehlen (die übrigens eine Klasse Folge Metrolaut mit Ronny aka Das Kraftfuttermischwerk gemacht haben) und ein Besuch bei Banksy lohnt sich natürlich auch immer wieder.

Rezept Weihnachtsplätzchen (zum ausstechen)

Zutaten:
- 200 gr Butter
- 200 gr Zucker
- 1 Pck Vanillinzucker
- eine Prise Salz
- geriebene Zitronenschale
- 2 Eier
- 400 gr Mehl
- Weinbrand- oder Rum Aroma (optional)

Butter, Zucker, Gewürze (geriebene Zitronenschale, Salz) und die beiden Eier zusammenwerfen und schaumig rühren. Anschließend die 400 gr. Mehl durch ein Sieb hinzugeben, außerdem das Rum- bzw Weinbrandaroma hinzugeben. Durchrühren und über Nacht in den Kühlschrank stellen (muss nicht sein, aber besser für das Aroma des Teigs). Am nächsten Tag dann nochmal geschmeidig kneten, bei Bedarf noch Mehl hinzugeben. Dann ausrollen mit einem Nudelholz, oder man nimmt die (von außen abgewaschene) Winflasche vom Vorabend. Dann einfach Plätzchen ausstechen, ca. 10 min bei 180° backen lassen. Anschließend kann dekoriert werden, z. B. mit Zitronenglasur. Mjamm. Eine schöne Weihnachtszeit!

Cory Doctorow: Why all pharmaceutical research should be made open access.

Cory Doctorow wrote an article for the Guardian on why all of the research in the health sector should be open access. He counters commen arguments like “[...] if the company paid for this, the research is all theirs.”.

Metrolaut, der Podcast von den Machern von Metronaut (die mit dem Bus), hatte vor einiger Zeit “Das Kraftfuttermischwerk” bei sich zu Gast. Geredet wird über’s Blogs, Parties, Clubs, Musik, Namen, Erlebnisreisen und ekelige “wir halten dich auf unserer Seite” Links. Und back than gab’s noch keine Abmahnung für Das Kraftfuttermischwerk, was sich aber geändert hat. Also, hopp, hopp, ab in den Player das Teil!

Traffic Wohnheim Gutz/Reiba 2003-present

I was curious and put together some code to generate a chart of the traffic usage from late 2003 until now.
The red bars are incoming traffic, green is outgoing. The bars only represent the traffic beeing accounted for, meaning inbound/outbound of the TU Dresden network.
The traffic limit was raised from about 3 GByte per week to 7 GByte over 7 consecutive days. The traffic per user is round about 10G/month today (it started out with round about 2G/month).
The huge dent in 2011 was in August, our servers broke and we didn’t count traffic for approx 2 weeks. In september most of the students are home, that’s why the traffic goes down as well.

I’m looking forward to do more of these charts and I’m looking forward presenting them to you.

Richard Stallman: Keynote for Output 2012

I did a recording of Richard Stallman’s Keynote at “Output 2012″. The sound quality isn’t very good, I forgot to bring my Zoom, so it was recorded with my Samsung’s YP-U5 internal mic. After beeing processed by auphonic.com I think the quality is acceptable to put it online. The content is licensed, as wished by the speaker, under a cc-by-nd license.

Richard Stallman is creator of the GNU Project, founder of the Free Software Foundation and he is also known as St. iGNUcius from the church of emacs.

I’m very happy that I had this opportunity to see him live, even though he declined to (GPG-) sign me a txt file with his book “Right to Read” (“To complicated right now.”). I even copied it to a ext3 formated volume beforehand.

He started with a lengthy Keynote (some 1 hour and 40 minutes), which was in the same way interesting and entertaining. He is a marvellous speaker. In the Question and Answer section afterwards, he gave an insight into his views. A very interesting issue raised was, when is software or firmware allowed to be non-free. The line RMS draws, he says, is: As long as the firmware/software cannot be updated [update](by third persons)[/update], it should be considered and treated as a circuit – which is not open either and doesn’t need to be, because we cannot produce circuits at home anyways. And he got mad at me when I tried to question this view :)
In my opinion this might be an acceptable view for the world as it is now (and it’s a thing that’s pratically achieveable), but I think this definition doesn’t go far enough (so did other people in the room think as well). I think, people will be able to do more with the upcoming technology like 3d-printers than just program software. We will be able to produce (simple) circuits in a couple of years at home. And thus, I think it’s not good to stop demanding free software just for updateable devices. We have to demand freedom for all the devices that we use – if it be the microwave oven or our hearing aids. Here I think Cory Doctorow’s talk from the 28c3 about “The coming war on general computation” describes the problems arising better and Doctorow’s call for arms for the right to be allowed to know the details of the software in our devices is the right thing to do.
Nevertheless. I came out of the talk (and q&a) with the strong urge to get involved in the movement, get rid of proprietary things, educate people but most importing: Go through the world with open eyes, trying to make it a better place.

Festtagsnapfkuchen

Mengenangaben beziehen sich auf eine Kastenform. Wenn ihr eine Napfform befüllen wollt, einfach alles verdoppeln. Kakao dazu geht natürlich auch – wenn ihr euch traut!

• 125 g Margarine
• 150 g Zucker
• 3 Stk Eier
• 200 g Mehl
• 0.5 Pck Backpulver
• 100 g abgezogene, gemahlene Mandeln (oder Haselnüsse)

Zuerst Butter, Zucker und die Eier schaumig rührmixern. Dann das, mit dem Backpulver versetzte, Mehl hinzumischen. Als letztes die gemahlenen $Nüsse.
Bei 180°C ungefähr 45-50 min backen.

Latex and SI-Units

Everybody knows the Problem: You are writing a formula, calculate something and then you end up with numbers – and some weird units. What to do? Until now, I always started something like
\frac{\mathrm{kg}*\mathrm{m}}{\mathrm{s}^2}. Thanks a lot! But today, I stumpled over the siunitx package. This makes it easier for you to attach units to numbers – both in text- and mathmode. The above SI-Unit would look like this:
\si{\kilo\gram\metre\per\square\second}
Or, if you prefer it shorter:
\si{kg.m/s^2}
You can even define your own units in the preamble:
\DeclareSIUnit{\koeartsforce}{\kilo\gram\metre\per\square\second}
Now I can write, that
The Monty Pythons' famous 16 Tons weight will smash you to the ground with a force of approx. \SI{156960.0}{\koeartsforce} - assumed you are standing on the surface of planet earth..

(Sorry Newton, I know this unit was actually dedicated to you!).
